Mrs. Poe is the Theatre Arts Director and an English teacher here at Bolsa Grande High School. This is her third year at BGHS. She comes all the way from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she was born and raised. She attended the Pennsylvania State University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, with a concentration in performance. She moved to Los Angeles in 2004, and worked as a professional actor for 8 years. Wanting to pursue a career in education, she went on to earn her teaching credential in secondary education, in English, from the California State University, Bakersfield. She is now studying at Brandman University for the Master of Arts in Education program.  Mrs. Poe has directed 6 high school shows including, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Shakespeare by the Harbor, Voices Unheard, Being Bianca, Ashes to Ashes, and The Diary of Anne Frank.  She is excited to see what this year brings!

English 1P Course Description:
 
English 1P is a course that will challenge students to develop their intellectual initiative through extensive study of literature, refinement of the writing process, and stimulation of high-level thinking skills. Students will reinforce these skills primarily through the study of short stories, poems, and non-fiction articles. Vocabulary, grammar, and research methods will also be imparted. Assignments are based on district-wide pacing and address the new Common Core State Standards.
 
English 1P is a college prep course designed for students who are genuinely interested in improving their language arts skills and developing their ability to analyze and appreciate literature. Challenging classwork, including frequent writing, reading, and speaking, are necessary in order to achieve growth. Student learning is evaluated by several methods, including but not limited to testing, writing, performance, and self-assessment.
 
Drama 1 Course Description:
 
Beginning Drama is a course that will challenge students to develop their artistic initiative through study of dramatic literature, design, and development of acting and playwriting techniques, in addition to other elements of drama. Students will work toward high-level thinking skills in classroom study, applicable reading and writing tasks, acting and improvisational exercises, as well as rehearsal and performance.  Assignments reflect the new Common Core State Standards.  Theatre experiences outside of class are required during the semester (attending theatrical performances, or participating in theatre productions).

Drama 2/3 Course Description:
 
Advanced Drama is a course that will challenge students to develop their artistic initiative through extensive study of dramatic literature, refinement of acting technique, and stimulation of high-level thinking skills.  Students will reinforce these skills primarily through preparation and performance or creative collaboration on two major works, as well as several additional projects.  Assignments reflect the new Common Core State Standards.  
 
Advanced Drama is designed for students who are genuinely interested in improving their theatrical skills and developing their ability to analyze and appreciate drama.  Challenging classwork, homework, frequent reading, writing and rehearsal both in and out of class are necessary to achieve growth.  Student learning is evaluated by several methods, including but not limited to testing, writing, performance, and self-assessment.
