Bolsa Grande High School’s Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) promotes Vietnamese American culture throughout Orange County and beyond through community service, performance, and involvement. One of the most distinguishable highlights that define BGHS’s VSA is their performances during the Lunar New Year. Students of VSA plan, organize, and choreograph a 30-minute long performance, entailing a lion dance routine and several traditional dances, which may include nón lá (leaf hat) dance and a traditional Vietnamese fan dance. VSA students host the performance on campus, and as part of the organization’s mission to spread cultural awareness, students also perform at various schools within the Garden Grove School District, including Peters Elementary, Woodbury Elementary, Cook Elementary, Morningside Elementary, Excelsior Elementary, Jordan Intermediate, Los Amigos High School, and many others. VSA students have also performed at the Westminster Public Library, Marina High School in Huntington Beach, and Santiago High School. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, GGUSD’s superintendent Gabriela Mafi, and members of the Board of Education, including, in recent years, vice-president Lan Quoc Nguyen and board member Teri Rocco, gather together to witness and participate in a celebration of culture and traditions.
