Computer Lab Activity "World Population Growth"

The way to work out this problem is to find out what the growth rate is during those time periods. For example, you'd need to compute the growth rate right around 8000 BC. Once you get the growth rate, you can use the "rule of 70" to quickly calculate the doubling time.

The hard part is figuring out the growth rate.

Remember that growth rate means how fast the number of people is changing PER YEAR.

So, this means you've got to figure out the growth rate from 8000 BC to 7999 BC.

To do this, you can manipulate EXCEL to find the population at 7999 BC. Some of you are probably very proficient with EXCEL; others of you may not. It's not my intention to grade you on your computer prowess, so we can work around this....stay with me...

Let's do a quick example of calculating growth rate:

If Fujiyamaville had a population of 100 in 2007, and a population of 101 in 2008, what would be its growth rate between these years?

ANS: Just like calculating your percent score on a test, take the difference in population; divide this by the original population, and this will give you your growth rate in decimal form. Simply multiply this by 100 to express your growth rate as a percent.

Example calculation:

(101 - 100) / 100 = 0.01

0.01 x 100 = 1

This means that Fujiyamaville had a 1% growth rate between these years.

Easy, right?

Remember that 0.01 = 1%

OK, let's assume that you're still with me, and you're not very familiar with EXCEL. No problem....

I'll give you the growth rates for these time periods; I'd like you to calculate the doubling time at that growth rate, and I'd like you to calculate the population:

at 8000 BC, the growth rate was 0.0175% Please calculate the doubling time at this growth rate, and calculate the population at 7999 BC

at 500 BC, the growth rate was 0.070% Please calculate the doubling time at this growth rate, and calculate the population at 499 BC

at 1700 AD, the growth rate was 0.350% Please calculate the doubling time at this growth rate, and calculate the population at 1701 AD

at 1900 AD, the growth rate was 1.167% Please calculate the doubling time at this growth rate, and calculate the population at 1901 AD

at 1950 AD, the growth rate was 1.75% Please calculate the doubling time at this growth rate, and calculate the population at 1951 AD

at 1980 AD, the growth rate was 2.0% Please calculate the doubling time at this growth rate, and calculate the population at 1981 AD

at 2000 AD, the growth rate was 2.0% Please calculate the doubling time at this growth rate, and calculate the population at 2001 AD
