typed, this we be in 2 parts for a total of 70 pts
Part 1 due 1/06/11
Title page title, name, date, lab partners(2 pts)
List of materials list of all materials used and amounts if possible (2 pts)
Flow chart of procedures ....see file(5 pts)
this can be drawn in by hand
Data Table ...numbered, titled, caption (9 pts)
if you are not sure how to write a flow chart, look here on bolsagrande.org
Part 2 due 1/11/11 TUESday
Analysis questions (25 pts)
Q1: Write the balanced equation for the Mg and O2. what kind of reaction is this? why is it not a combustion reaction? what evidence in your observations support your answer?
Q2:3 reactions occur in this lab
rxn 1: Mg + N2 --> Mg3N2
rxn 2: Mg3N2 + H2O --> Mg(OH)2 + NH3
rxn 3: Mg(OH)2 --> MgO + H2O
for reaction, balance the equation and identify what reaction type it is.
Q3:Calculate the weight of the Magnesium oxide you created in your lab using data from you lab. this is your actual value
Q4: Use the weight of Mg you measure before you did the lab.
convert the Mg to moles.
now that you have the mols of Mg, use the balanced equation and find the # of mols of MgO
now that you have the mols of MgO, use the molar mass to find the grams of MgO
this will be or experimental/theoretical value
Q5: Calculate the % error using the answer from Q3 and Q4
Conclusion (27 points)
see previous conclusion for how to write this.

chemistry caroling project
It is that time of year again.
in the spirit of the holidays I want you to go caroling but not just any carols, CHEMISTRY CAROLS!
DIRECTIONS:
1. You must sing to any adult on campus. this includes grandma, the cafeteria, subs, the custodial, police officers, etc.
2. Who you carol to will inital their name next to the song you sang. They have to like it or else they do not have to sign.
3. you may ONLY carol between dec 6 to dec 16.
4. you get 5 pts per song
5. BONUSES: if you carol as a group you get an extra 2 pts for every 4 people. SO if you had a group of 8 and sang 2 songs, you get EACH get 14 pts.
if you sing as a group, have 1 index card with all your names/per and the songs you sang so the adults only have to sign 1 paper.
if you dance while caroling, then the dancers get an extra point.
if you come i costume, then you get an extra 5 pts DEPENDING on the quality of your costume. (I WILL judge that)
6. There will be a sign up sheet for the OFFICE, you MAY NOT carol to them if you did not sign up on the sheet.
7. print up the file and have it with you.
8. anyone caroling before dec 6th will lose 20 pts and get NO EC at all.
9. you may only carol before school, lunch, after school. NO 6th period, NO break, NOT during any class time.

how to write a conclusion
In paragraph form. written in 3rd person, active voice. in 3 paragraphs.
Here are the highlights. MOre detailed explanation is posted in the file on bolsagrande.org
1. Answer your hypothesis of how it worked or did not work. Give reasons why this happened. If there was no hypothesis, skip this.
2. summarize your results. DO not tell me what you did, or how you felt. I want to know what the major data was. Include your error % and error analysis here IF it was not included anywhere else.
2A. Suggest biases that may have affected the experimental design. Discuss how they can be eliminated in the future. Discuss the possibility of using a different methodology or design.
example: Since only 1 drop of each solution was used, it was hard to see if a gas formed. A bigger sample done in a test tube was make it easier to see any gas bubbles forming.
3. After drawing graphs and answering questions in the analysis section. USE your analysis questions to help you explain any relationships between the factors that were tested in the experiment. Use data to support your relationship.
For example, increasing the amount of heat, will shorten the amount time to boil. On average, increasing the temperature 4 degrees made the reaction go 3 mins faster than at room temp.
Another example: When Ag reacts with any halide ion like Cl- it forms a precipitate.

Lab Report
typed, font 12, times new roman, helvetica, garamond
active voice, 3rd person.
Item 1: title page (2 pts)
item 2: data table (6 pts)
title, number, caption, labels with units
item 3: analysis questions (24 pts)
DISREGARD the questions on the handout. do following question
answer in complete sentences and thought, show all calculations with units.
#1.Use the representative wavelength for each color that you collected. Make a bar graph with the x axis metal ion and the y axis wavelength. remember to format your graph.
#2 Use your data to PROVE that the color emitted comes from the metal ion and not the nonmetal. example: NaCl, the yellow color is from Na+ and not Cl-
#3 For each color, record the representative wavelength and put them in a table, this will be table #2
#4 Using the answers from #3, convert each wavelength from nm to meters. Do all and show work for all
#5 Use the formula provided to calculate the energy of 1 photon. make sure to show work and units.
groups 1, 7 will do NaCl, and KCl
groups 2, 6 will do CuCl2 and LiCl
groups 3, 5 will do BaCl2 and NaNO3
group 4 and 8 will do Sr(NO3)2 and CaCl2
#6 What is the unknown? Explain how you know.
item 4: conclusion (6 pts)
summarize major results, what did you find out? extend on the lab by discussing how the your group could have done the lab better. What are the limitations of the lab? how could you do further experiements to get more accurate data. for example how could you get a more precise wavelength? is the data collected here more qualitative or quantitative. what would you recommend for other lab groups who will do the lab next.
Item 5 for correct formatting of lab report. 2 points
total is 40 points--typed, font 12, times new roman, helvetica, garamond, active voice, 3rd person,

Lab Report
typed, font 12, times new roman, helvetica, garamond
active voice, 3rd person.
