The Freshman Academy/Study Skills course provides support to incoming Freshmen who are struggling academically and/or need to acquire study skills in order to be successful in high school and beyond.
The three key elements of the program are:
1. Knowledge - Improve literacy, test preparation, study skills, time management, and collaborative group work.
2. Motivation - Develop short and long-term goals and implement a plan to achieve.
3. Academic Support - Guidance will be provided for all students.
Tutorials and tutoring are a major part of the program. Every Tuesday and Thursday, students participate in a tutorial asking and answering questions in the core academic areas. In addition, the National Honor Society provides mandatory after-school tutoring for Academy students who have a D or F in any of their classes. These tutoring sessions are every Wednesday in room 413. Again, this is a requirement for students receiving a letter grade of a D or F, so please make every effort for your student to attend.
Grade checks are given out to students for their teachers to fill out. The grade checks are assigned on the Thursdays stated below. After school, your student will bring you the grade check to sign. Then, the student will bring it to school the next day. At this time, she/he and I will meet and discuss progress, future goals, and actions/interventions that need to occur in order to raise any poor grades. The dates for the grade checks are the following:
1st Qtr. 10-01-09 10-22-09 11-19-09
2nd Qtr. 12-10-09 1-14-10 2-11-10
3rd Qtr. 3-04-10 3-25-10 4-22-10
4th Qtr. 5-06-10 5-27-10
Finally, binder checks occur every Friday. The syllabus attached gives a supply list of things needed for the binder. Students must have all their course materials included and organized. Other classes need to be included with the exception of teachers who require an interactive notebook. Each week that the students turn in their binders, ten Cornell notes are required as well. These notes are taken in their other classes and shown on the date of the check to demonstrate their participation in their other classes.
Please see the syllabus attached in order to get a better idea of what this program has to offer.
