The Inner City Outings (ICO) program funds our trips, and this costs at least $5,000 each school year. Every person who works with ICO as a leader or volunteer is not paid for his/her services--it's all volunteer work, so understand why our ICO website is terribly out of date!
If you are considering following in the bootprints of those who blazed a leadership trail--Merilyn Ho, 2006; Gabby Saloky and Xuan Mai, 2007--you need to check out this website and study the official general protocol for leading an ICO trip.
- For those of you whom leadership is a goal, you MUST study this website to understand what will be expected of you as you advance toward completing your leadership training.
- Whenever we venture hither and yon, WAC observes Leave No Trace (LNT) ethics. If you plan to join us in an outing, please log on to this website so that you understand the reasons for our outdoor protocols e.g, why you need to be 200 feet (about 2/3 of a football field) away from waterways if you have to go to the bathroom in the wilderness; or why you cannot make your camp right alongside a stream, even though every advertisement for camping gear always shows a happy camper and his tent, dog and campfire right next to an alpine lake!

Here's a website that most folks don't know about.
You can join the Sierra Club for $15/year; usually for students, the rate is $25/year.
It's not necessary to be a Sierra Club member to be a WAC member, but all Certified Volunteers and Certified Leaders (like Mr. Bui and me) must be current Sierra Club members. If you plan to pursue this leadership goal (like Xuan has), then budget your income and sign up. Remember that your membership dues in large part go toward political efforts to conserve the environmental integrity of our planet.
